Hello again! Lawrence Kasdan directed Silverado, which he also co-wrote alongside his brother Mark. The film features Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Brian Dennehy, Jeff Goldblum, Linda Hunt and Rosanna Arquette. Bruce Broughton composed the music, and John Bailey handled the cinematography. As someone who appreciates Westerns, it’s fascinating to look back at Silverado about 30 years after its initial release. When it first appeared, the genre was essentially finished, so it was a brave and lovely adventure. It's great to see that, aside from a few things typical of the 1980s, it remains an excellent Western with a genuine feel for the genre. It doesn’t really offer anything groundbreaking in terms of its subject matter; instead, it embraces what it pays tribute to, incorporating every familiar element and writing trope in a respectful way. The Kasdan brothers accomplished exactly what they intended: to entertain people who like this kind of film. The actors are all doing well, clearly having fun with the story and the setting. The locations are spectacular, the landscapes beautiful, and the production design is equally impressive. Broughton’s score is lively and uplifting, even if a lot of it sounds distinctly 1980s rather than belonging to an earlier period. Action sequences are expertly handled; any improbability doesn't matter because the results are joyful, and the stunt work is top-notch. Issues like prostitution and racism are barely touched upon, but there’s strong character development throughout, keeping viewers engaged from beginning to end. There are heroes, anti-heroes, unstable individuals, thieves, and power-hungry villains—nothing is overlooked. This isn't for those seeking the dark tone of something like Unforgiven or Hostiles; it’s more in line with Tombstone or even the controversial Lone Ranger. If you haven’t already seen it, give it a watch! 8/10
