A book editor on his way from Los Angeles to Chicago by rail (Gene Wilder) claims he sees a crime while socializing with an assistant (Jill Clayburgh). He then gets pulled into what seems like a risky plot. Richard Pryor is cast as a thief who offers some assistance, Ned Beatty portrays another passenger, Patrick McGoohan plays a refined art dealer, Richard Kiel takes on the role of a large man and Len Birman appears as a police officer. "Silver Streak” (1976) combines elements of a Hitchcock-style murder mystery with the comedic performances of Wilder and Pryor to create an enjoyable movie set on a train. As mentioned in my introduction, it successfully blends different types of storytelling into a diverting and engaging journey. If you’re fond of films centered around trains like "Runaway Train" (1985), "Transiberian" (2008), "Train" (2008), “Night Train” (2009), "Beyond the Door III" (1989), “The Cassandra Crossing” (1976), “Breakheart Pass” (1975) and “Horror Express” (1972), this one should appeal to you as well. It’s at least as good as many of those, because it adds humor alongside the suspenseful situations reminiscent of 80's Indiana Jones films. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour, 54 minutes and was filmed in several locations including Southern California – specifically Century City (a studio), Los Angeles’ Union Station, South Pasadena (the New Mexico train stop), the Mojave Desert (where the ranch with the plane is located), and Brea (the sheriff's office), as well as Alberta (for the prairie scenes), Locust Hill in Ontario, Toronto’s Union Station, and Chicago’s Northwestern Station.
