It's an interesting science fiction narrative. Bruce Dern portrays a somewhat unhinged scientist, and it might be his most appealing character yet, considering the types of roles he’s taken on. He comes across as genuinely concerned, with one significant exception: he eliminates everyone else aboard his spacecraft. It’s surprising to still find him sympathetic given that. His actions are driven by a purpose that feels more substantial than those of his previous antagonists. The goal is preserving plant life for Earth. His crewmates didn't grasp the importance of this mission, which highlights just how bleak their world has become. This all unfolds relatively quickly in the movie. Following this, his new companions are robots, and he connects with them on a human level. Earth’s leaders have chosen to eradicate all plant life, so essentially, he embodies both heroic and villainous traits; it's difficult to say which applies. But is he ultimately able to rescue anything for humankind?
