Silent Running is notable for yet another erratic portrayal by Bruce Dern. He embodies Freeman Lowell, a researcher on a spacecraft tasked with safeguarding the last vestiges of Earth’s flora en route to Saturn. Lowell has formed a bond with the enclosed environment within the spaceship and seems distant from his fellow crew members; he murders them after they are instructed to eliminate the plants. Isolated and battling despair, Lowell finds companionship in three robots, but then the plants begin to perish due to diminished sunlight as the ship approaches Saturn. Director Douglas Trumbull crafted a somewhat modest science fiction film; at times, the interior designs evoked the feeling of an early 1970s television program. The movie also incorporates folk music to reinforce its environmental theme.
