Silent Running is notable for yet another intense portrayal by Bruce Dern. He embodies Freeman Lowell, a researcher on a vessel tasked with safeguarding the last vestiges of Earth’s flora en route to Saturn. Lowell has formed a bond with the contained ecosystem and seems distant from his fellow crew members, ultimately killing them after they are instructed to eliminate the plant life. Isolated and struggling against despair, Lowell finds solace in the company of three robots; however, his plants begin to fail as sunlight diminishes during the ship’s approach to Saturn. Director Douglas Trumbull crafted a science fiction film with a somewhat modest aesthetic; at times, the interior designs evoked a television program from the early 1970s. The movie also incorporates folk music to reinforce its environmental themes.
