The Hebrides offer some lovely visuals within this film, however, it gives the impression of struggling to find its purpose. The narrative centers on a young boy called "Dondo" (Louis McCartney) and his mother (Victoria Belnaves) as they navigate an anniversary—one that isn't happy, since his father disappeared at sea, and the boy can’t accept the worst has happened. What follows is often difficult to distinguish between reality and a more fanciful world where surfing and newfound religious beliefs offer solace; the story attempts to explore how "Dondo" processes unresolved grief. Simultaneously, he experiences adolescent feelings, as does neighbor “Sas” (Ella Lily Hyland), although they don’t recognize their mutual attraction, and their friendship begins to help him concentrate. This focus intensifies when his mother decides she needs a way to find some resolution—a memorial led by their local pastor "Paddy" (Mark Lockyer). There are moments of genuine emotional depth in observing how challenging it can be to confront loss without clear guidelines for managing feelings of loneliness and being cut off, but I suspect much of that comes from the audience’s connection with a well-developed character rather than because writer/director Jonny Barrington has created anything particularly impactful. The film seems overly dependent on the landscape, touches of dark humor, and several unspoken expectations to gain traction, and honestly, I found both those elements and the subplot involving teenage feelings disappointing. It serves as an adequate foundation for telling the story, but ultimately feels unfinished regarding the predicament "Dondo" faces.
