It was unexpected to see a film like this come from John Woo, especially given his reputation. Having been a fan of his usual energetic, fast-moving, intense action movies, I find *Silent Night* to be quite a different and subdued experience. The narrative’s origins are genuinely upsetting, and it seems the movie focuses on that element to a degree that feels close to being overly gloomy. While I understand the main characters' actions stem from a heartbreaking incident, repeatedly returning to this part of their history tends to weigh down the film emotionally; it felt like constant emotional setbacks were hindering what should have been an exciting action experience. The action is well-executed—the fights and gun battles are in line with what you’d expect from John Woo. It's not dull once things get going. Ultimately, it's something I could watch again, but for me personally, the pervasive sadness made it hard to fully enjoy as a lighthearted action film.
