John Chard on Silent Night, Deadly Night

6.5/10 · Apr 13, 2015

Silent Night, Deadly Night, considered a cult horror staple, offers something special for fans of older horror movies. The story centers on a boy who sees his parents murdered by someone in a Santa suit. Afterward, he’s raised in an orphanage overseen by a strict headmistress, eventually leaves to find work at a department store. During the Christmas season, he's pressured into playing Santa and quickly descends into madness, picking up an axe and going on a violent rampage against anyone who stands in his path. Essentially, it follows a straightforward stalk-and-slash pattern, executed effectively with some surprising moments and enhanced by the presence of Robert Brian Wilson as a physically imposing man with an innocent face portraying the deranged Santa. However, contemporary horror enthusiasts might find it hard to understand its appeal. Pay attention to the abrupt music, the unsettling atmosphere—the overall unpleasantness of it all—and notice how the filmmakers avoid unnecessary scenes; they quickly deliver short, intense shocks and intentionally make things feel uncomfortable to provoke a response. It’s not a perfect horror film – the performances aren't great, and the conclusion feels hurried – but in the same year that Wes Craven introduced one of cinema’s most iconic monsters, Charles E. Sellier Jr. and his writing team provided a reason to be wary of Santa Claus. The rating is 6.5/10.
