A string of disturbing murders on Christmas Eve in Wisconsin forces a Deputy (Jaime King) and Sheriff (Malcolm McDowell) to hunt down the person responsible, with hopes of stopping them before the town’s parade. "Silent Night" (2012) marks the sixth film in the “Silent Night, Deadly Night” franchise, which began back in 1984. This entry arrived without generating any significant controversy, a contrast to the original movie's reception. Appearing 28 years after the first film and 21 years following the previous one, it’s a clear step up overall. Despite some scenes that pay tribute to the initial film, this isn't a remake. It presents an entirely new narrative, different characters, and a separate setting. The movie also references the real-life Covina Massacre, which occurred on Christmas Eve in 2008 when Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, disguised as Santa Claus, murdered nine people through gunfire and arson at a holiday gathering near Los Angeles. The film incorporates all the expected elements of a slasher: an unknown killer wearing a mask; violent deaths; an engaging plotline; a relatable female lead embodying the “final girl” archetype; dark humor that some might miss; and attractive actresses (like Courtney-Jane White, alongside Cortney Palm). It doesn’t attempt to revolutionize the genre; it simply executes its intentions effectively, notably surpassing the quality of the first film. Plus, Malcolm McDowell delivers a strong performance.
