A rather unremarkable slasher film drawing inspiration from movies like “Halloween” and “Black Christmas,” this one feels easily overlooked. The story centers around a disturbed individual who escapes from an institution and is then pursued by a psychiatrist, Belinda Montgomery, to the upstate college where he previously worked and committed a past tragedy. Her goal is to stop him before more people are hurt. "Silent Madness” (1984) seems to combine elements of “Halloween” (1978), "Black Christmas" (1974), and "The House on Sorority Row" (1983)—a slasher revolving around a silent killer at a sorority, with a doctor from the mental hospital desperately trying to track him down. While I don't find those earlier films particularly appealing myself, they hold significance within the genre. This one simply doesn’t measure up. There are some worthwhile aspects, such as Montgomery’s performance and the film’s settings and cast. Though, the actor portraying the sheriff seems a bit too old for his role. One memorable killing involves an aerobics student suspended upside down using rope, a dumbbell, and a window. However, the directing and editing are uninspired and occasionally feel amateurish, with noticeable continuity problems. The writing is perhaps its biggest flaw, riddled with plot holes. The film spends excessive time detailing the circumstances of the patient’s release and the subsequent cover-up, while neglecting to explore an intriguing secret ward—a clear attempt to pad out the running time. Little about it feels genuine; it's like a strange version of a slasher that prioritizes visual effects over building suspense, which isn’t particularly effective when watching in two dimensions. Essentially, this is an early 80’s slasher that didn’t have its issues resolved during production, likely due to budget limitations preventing revisions. This becomes apparent because “Silent Madness” comes across as bizarre at times and clumsy at others. Even a more straightforward film like "Sorority House Massacre" (1986) is preferable.
