The movie clocks in at just over ninety minutes, yet feels considerably longer. Mel Gibson portrays Graham, a widower raising his two children, Morgan (Rory Culkin) and Bo (Abigail Breslin), alongside his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) on their farm. Things proceed routinely until the family finds crop circles in their cornfields. Initially believing them to be pranks, they become more interested when news reports indicate similar occurrences are appearing worldwide. Adding to their growing concerns are nighttime sounds and unexplained events, leading the family to suspect they’re being monitored—and that whatever is watching isn't friendly. The final portion of the film manages to partially improve things, but for the majority of its running time, it's a frustratingly slow experience. There's not a lot of action to be found; Gibson and Phoenix fail to create a convincing connection between their characters as brothers, and the children—typically important in M. Night Shyamalan films—are given little to do. The film leans heavily into melodrama, with the backstory of loss and sorrow distracting from the slowly building feeling of dread. I felt the narrative’s pace was uneven. It's an acceptable movie, but certainly not a high point for anyone involved.
