I thought this movie was pretty great; it’s like stumbling across something special on CBC in the middle of the night, the kind of thing they used to play with unusual content—you know, German films that occasionally featured nudity and dealt with taboo subjects. The audio design, the sense of being under attack, the vehicles, a distinctive urban setting, the outfits, the depiction of 1980s anxieties around homosexuality, and the quirky characters combined with a futuristic technological aesthetic make it essential viewing for those who appreciate that kind of thing. But if you’re looking for detailed strategies, realistic results, or a conventionally well-made film, this isn't for you; you won't find any of that in Self Defense/Siege.
