Two US Marshals, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, journey to an island near Massachusetts in 1954 to look into the vanishing of a patient from its criminal asylum. The detective in charge believes something isn't right. "Shutter Island," released in 2010, feels like a blend of “The Shawshank Redemption” and “A Beautiful Mind,” with elements reminiscent of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Directed by Scorsese, it's a well-made film featuring an excellent group of actors, including Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley. The initial portion—roughly three-quarters of the movie—works pretty well as a suspenseful, deliberate investigation set against the backdrop of post-World War II America, with some revealing flashbacks to Dachau Concentration Camp. However, I felt the final quarter significantly diminished the film’s impact. The surprise reveal could have been handled in a more concise and engaging manner, like it was in “The Sixth Sense,” but instead, things are stretched out too long. For example, the concluding scene between DiCaprio and Michelle Williams just didn't grab my attention. That said, enjoyment is subjective. If what I’ve described sounds appealing to you, then it might be worth seeing; many serious movie fans appreciate it. The title, “Shutter Island,” is cleverly rearranged letters that spell out "truths and lies" or "truths/denials.” The film has a running time of 2 hours and 18 minutes and was filmed primarily in Massachusetts, with additional scenes shot in Los Angeles and at Hearst Ranch, San Simeon.
