This film shares a certain spirit with "The African Queen" (1951), despite being a fairly forgettable but entertaining story about "Flynn" (Lee Marvin), his daughter "Rosa" (Barbara Perkins), and her upper-class British husband "Sebastian" (Roger Moore). They embark on a quest to get payback for the ruin of their East African existence by attacking the "SMS Blücher" of the Kriegsmarine while it's being fixed up close to Zanzibar. It’s an amusing adventure, and everyone seems to have had a good time making it; Reinhard Kolldehoff is nearly as effective an adversary in the role of the German character as Gert Frobe could have been. The whole thing feels like a playful joke – historical accuracy takes a backseat to this narrative about imperialism and stubbornness. It’s simply enjoyable, and I imagine the cast had some memorable nights on set!
