Shotgun Wedding attempts to juggle its lightheartedness, though it does manage to elicit some laughs. The movie employed a familiar storyline—a couple held captive while they find their way back to each other—similar to films like The Lost City. However, the film had difficulty reconciling the more dramatic elements with its comedic intentions. Having all of the wedding attendees become hostages heightened the tension and made it somewhat challenging to enjoy the humor. Jennifer Coolidge, though, was a standout, bringing considerable entertainment value and stealing every scene she appeared in, which further showcased her talent for comedy. While Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel were enjoyable, their characters' relationship felt strained due to a script that didn’t allow enough time for proper development. It almost seemed as if two separate couples existed—one in the initial twenty minutes and another during the final hour and a half, because they quickly devolved into caricatures once the action began. The movie’s conclusion, specifically the climactic scene involving a death, was my favorite part; I found it genuinely funny and rewatched it afterward. Shotgun Wedding is a streaming romantic comedy that rises above some of its contemporaries in that space—such as the Father of the Bride remake or The Valet—though not by much.
