It’s strange how this version of the story feels incomplete, illustrating that familiar saying about differing perspectives on conflict. Douglas Booth portrays Wilkin, a police detective in British-controlled Palestine, and he seems like an essentially decent man, though his performance isn't particularly memorable. His superior, "Chambers" (Ian Hart), is more calculating, bringing in Morton (Harry Melling), who’s much more inclined to use force, to expedite things—particularly the capture of Stern (Aury Alby), a man committed to creating a Jewish homeland by any means necessary. The core narrative draws heavily from actual events, so there's not much suspense involved; however, it offers an intriguing look at how Britain attempted to govern a region and its people, with a short-sighted approach that disregarded the long-term consequences for everyone. Both Palestinians and Jews shared one common goal—to see the UK leave—but beyond that, agreement was scarce as violence persisted. Frankly, I felt Irina Starshenbaum’s character was barely relevant to what is fundamentally a stark depiction of a territory perpetually embroiled in conflict. The production values are adequate, but it all feels fragmented—almost episodic—and would have benefited from a more compelling and convincing storyteller at the helm. It's disappointing.
