This film is remarkably good, portraying a family who scrapes by using their intelligence while living close to poverty. Their actions have a quality reminiscent of Fagin’s gang, but consistently, we understand that their minor illegal activities are driven by need rather than any desire to hurt others. When they take in a young girl found on the street, it further strains their limited means, yet this happens without bitterness or protest, and the story moves through various episodes—some deeply touching, others more weighty. The stark difference between the three generations of the "Shibata" family inhabiting a space as small as an ordinary garage and the considerable wealth and Japanese luxury around them is skillfully presented by a talented ensemble cast—particularly the younger actors—under Hirozaku Koreeda’s thoughtful direction, resulting in two hours of cinema that prompts reflection.
