I'm inclined to give this a 10, mainly because Sidney Poitier is consistently convincing. That’s truly the most significant thing one can say about his performance. The core issue, though, is that he carries such a distinguished reputation, and this film turns out to be just another routine police procedural. Seeing his name on it initially leads you to assume it will be award-worthy, but that isn't the case. However, Poitier’s believability and Berenger’s unsettling portrayal are definite strengths—and that's not a criticism. He genuinely embodies this peculiar, awkward hermit who is ideal for the part. In my opinion, it represents one of Tom Berenger’s stronger roles in a film far removed from anything Oliver Stone has directed. The only real weak point is Alley’s performance; she doesn’t do poorly, but Berenger's portrayal was excellent and Poitier brought his usual level of believability to the role, while Alley seemed to be simply playing an 80s stereotype, which ultimately prevents it from being a truly great movie, relegating it to just another genre film. It’s clear that Berenger and Poitier both carefully considered the script and felt it presented a challenge—an opportunity to contribute more than anyone anticipated. They were remarkably supportive of each other's performances, and I regret they didn't collaborate on more projects together. Ultimately, you end up with an 80s film that feels disposable, but two actors elevated their work, making it memorable despite its generic nature. That’s what shapes my overall assessment.
