The “Dunlap” family finds itself at a difficult point, as novelist “George” (Albert Finney) and his wife “Faith” (Diane Keaton) are navigating their failing marriage before he abandons them—leaving her and their four daughters behind for “Sandy” (Karen Allen), who is also dealing with the aftermath of a previous relationship and an intense infatuation with him. "George" demonstrates a degree of selfishness, desiring both his new lover and his family, home, and essentially everything he has. It leads “Faith” to question why she should simply remain at home waiting for him to mature. An opportunity presents itself when the contractor hired to build her tennis court appears. She lacks the $1000 payment, but after hearing about her situation, "Frank" (Peter Weller) offers to find a solution. The stage is then set: she begins making progress while he pursues “Sandy.” However, contentment remains elusive. It’s clear that “George” hadn't fully considered how his choices would affect him, nor the impact on his children; his older daughter, "Sherry" (Dana Hill), quickly expresses her desire to have nothing to do with him. This rejection is something he struggles to accept, and combined with his former wife’s apparent ability to move forward, his problems begin to negatively influence everything he's involved in. Outbursts and angry episodes follow, and Finney shines as his character gradually unravels, but Keaton’s more understated yet powerful performance truly distinguishes the film. She conveys a sense of frustration and anger alongside stoicism born from her responsibility to care for her children and her determination to create a life for herself. Hill also delivers a noteworthy portrayal of a young girl grappling with the disintegration of her family. The movie shows its age, and the storyline itself isn't particularly innovative or surprising as it unfolds over two hours of dramatic family conflict; however, the acting is worth experiencing, and the ending provides a sense of release that only a film production (with ample insurance) could achieve.
