A jolt to the system, though Vinnie can’t be held responsible. Janet Stewert is waiting for her husband Paul, who’s returning from World War II, when she sees a murder. The shock sends her to the hospital and under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Cross. It turns out that Dr. Cross is the one who committed the crime! Vincent Price (as Dr. Cross) is practically inseparable from horror films; he's a genuinely talented actor whose skills are sometimes overshadowed by his appearances in movies filled with gruesome deaths. In this low-budget production, Price is really the only reason to stick around until the credits roll. The story has a good foundation and the setting lends itself well to dark events, but *Shock* is incredibly slow. Director Alfred L. Werker and screenwriter Eugene Ling adapted Albert DeMond’s story with the goal of making a sensational film. Unfortunately, even with Price's performance, they failed to inject any real energy into it! The movie includes lengthy monologues that are repeated, creating a sense of going nowhere. It’s watchable because you want to know what happens, but the lackluster ending leaves you feeling like something was promised and never delivered. The other actors aren’t particularly memorable, though Lynn Bari does have one noteworthy part—though it's not substantial enough for her to really sink her teeth into. A few atmospheric scenes at the sanitarium do briefly lift the story, especially a scene during a thunderstorm. However, these are just fleeting moments of brightness. Thankfully, *Shock* is short, only 70 minutes long, so it doesn’t consume too much time. Ultimately, this film is really for those who collect everything by Vincent Price; it's a missed chance overall. 4/10
