Pauline Collins delivers a remarkable performance in this adaptation of Willy Russell’s play, portraying a restless housewife who often finds herself at home drinking wine and speaking aloud while awaiting her husband's (Bernard Hill) arrival for dinner precisely at 6:00 pm. When her friend, "Jane" (Alison Steadman), wins a two-week vacation to Mykonos, she asks "Shirley" to join her. After some hesitation, Shirley agrees to go after a visit from her rather self-centered daughter, “Millandra” (Tracie Bennett). However, Jane quickly changes her mind and returns home, leaving "Shirley" on her own. She soon finds a substitute for the wall she typically talks to – a rock—and it appears that she has simply exchanged her kitchen for a beach, particularly as the other British tourists attempting to befriend her prove rather foolish. While out walking, she discovers a small seaside bar where she encounters "Costas" (Tom Conti), and her adventure truly unfolds. This feels very much like a British film; I believe its humor is sarcastic and understated, frequently eliciting genuine laughter and generally working well. The dialogue’s observant quality—often sharply expressed through conversations with inanimate objects—is also quite entertaining, mirroring the approach used by her isolated husband in his desolate kitchen. Pauline Collins rightly received an Oscar nomination for this role, as I left the theater contemplating how many middle-aged individuals awaken in their mid-forties to realize that their lives have been lived indirectly and largely missed.
