The performance by Stian Smestad, playing Haakon, is enjoyable within this story that combines elements of "Treasure Island" and "Robinson Crusoe," set around a seafaring adventure. Because his farm in Norway is facing repossession, he consents to work as a ship’s boy for a couple of years. Following a short stay in England—where they recruit Royal Navy sailor “Lt. Merrick” (Gabriel Byrne)—they resume their journey; not long after leaving port, the captain passes away and "Merrick" takes over leadership with a style reminiscent of Captain Bligh. A severe storm causes the ship to be destroyed, forcing the young man to survive alone on an uninhabited island. He proves to be resourceful and capable, quickly establishing order; he finds a stash of treasure and even forms a bond with a bear. While exploring his new surroundings, he locates two acquaintances alongside some indigenous people, and they subsequently come across Byrne, who then reveals himself as a pirate motivated by the pursuit of riches. The remainder of the plot unfolds in a predictable manner, featuring numerous pitfalls and chases through dense vegetation leading to an easily foreseeable resolution. It provides a pleasant experience overall, although Gabriel Byrne wasn't necessarily my ideal casting choice—he lacks a certain charisma or threatening quality when portraying the villain.
