Alice Krige’s performance and the gorgeous Scottish landscapes of Speyside are highlights, though the mystery itself proves fairly forgettable. The story centers around an aging actress who travels to this isolated region with her nurse, Desi (Kota Eberhardt). Upon arrival, she realizes she isn't alone; the house is occupied by others seeking respite, overseen by a nearly unrecognizable Tirador (Rupert Everett). She finds some solace in having her own cabin where she can be by herself. There’s an abundance of charcoal present, which turns out to have roots in the area’s history of witch burnings. Soon, she experiences dreams depicting these tragic events and something like ancient ooze seems to pursue her as she begins floating from her bed. The film moves at a slow pace, revealing that she was initially found by director Eric Hathbourne (Malcolm McDowell), who perhaps wasn't entirely ethical in his treatment of her when she was younger. Her new surroundings appear to grant her the ability to access his mind and thoughts, potentially allowing her to exact revenge. Krige delivers a strong performance, evoking a touch of Norma Desmond. However, both McDowell and Everett have limited screen time. Eberhardt’s character has a minor subplot that fades out before a hurried and ultimately disappointing conclusion. The film is technically well-made, with high production values and effective drone shots showcasing the Cairngorms—but it's ultimately unremarkable. I’m happy I saw it in a cinema, but it could easily be viewed on television later, as far as I am concerned.
