Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on She Rides Shotgun

0/10 · Aug 9, 2025

“She Rides Shotgun,” based on Jordan Harper's award-winning novel, is a crime thriller that feels very real, intensely affecting, and full of raw emotion. It presents a harsh, often brutal story—sometimes beautiful—about violence, staying alive, and the complicated connection between a father and daughter. The movie boasts a well-crafted script and two truly remarkable performances from the main actors, making it an unexpected gem that deserves attention. Taron Egerton is excellent as Nate, a man recently released from prison whose past immediately resurfaces. He’s pursued by a violent skinhead gang, forcing him to take his 11-year-old daughter Polly (Ana Sophia Heger delivers an astonishing performance) on the run. Their escape turns into a harrowing journey where they both have to learn things neither of them expected. The script is very well done and moves quickly, avoiding unnecessary moments or overly sentimental scenes. It’s dark and relentless, with gritty storytelling that doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. While hope is scarce in this world, there’s just enough humanity to make you want these two troubled people to find some peace. The relationship between Nate and Polly is central to the film, and their changing bond is both heartbreaking and captivating. It’s disturbing to see Polly gradually become comfortable—and even occasionally excited—by a life of crime, but this change is portrayed with sensitivity, never glorified, and always presented as tragic. Heger gives one of the most impressive child performances in recent years. She's engaging, complex, and completely believable. This role has the potential to significantly advance her career. Egerton is equally good, displaying both toughness and emotional depth as a man trying to escape his mistakes while teaching his daughter how to survive in a world he helped damage. The casting choices are perfect, and they greatly enhance the film. The movie builds toward an intense ending that doesn’t quite stick the landing as well as everything else, particularly because some parts feel unrealistic. However, even this can't diminish how skillfully the story is put together. It’s less about surprising plot twists and more about its psychological impact; it’s a film that keeps you emotionally invested. “She Rides Shotgun” tells a powerful and deeply affecting story of loyalty, revenge, and the terrible price of love in a broken world. It's not an easy movie to watch, but it is very good.
