This 2010 film, Sharktopus, raises questions about how far we can push things—though my concern isn’t really with the creature itself, but with the movie! It feels like a point where we’ve gone too far; searching for the worst examples of shark-themed exploitation films will probably lead you to share my opinion. The computer-generated imagery isn't terrible compared to some other movies out there, though it's definitely below average and some effort was put into it. Predictably, there’s an older man with questionable intentions leering at the women on the beach—what low-budget movie would be complete without that kind of character alongside scantily clad women? And why is everything presented as overtly sexual, like everyone is constantly thinking about sex? I also noticed they cut away when a guy throws a football; you don't even see the other person catch it! The film’s rhythm feels completely off too. Forty minutes in and very little has actually occurred. The picture quality is pretty poor, almost as if someone smeared grease on the camera lens—it makes you wonder about the cameraman’s competence. He’s one of the few good aspects of the movie besides Nicole Sands' character. I have no idea why the Family Guy actor is a pirate radio DJ, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s not a good film, but at least it isn’t mind-numbingly dull.
