This romantic comedy presents a pleasant story with something valuable to say. Hal (Jack Black), a man from Charlotte, North Carolina, finds himself drawn to a woman who weighs 300 pounds (Gwyneth Paltrow) after attending a seminar led by Tony Robbins, which alters his perspective. Jason Alexander appears as Hal’s friend. “Shallow Hal” (2001) manages to be entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time. The film highlights the significance of inner beauty—something Hal couldn't appreciate because he was preoccupied with appearances. Through a technique employed by Tony Robbins, his superficiality is taken away, allowing him to finally recognize what’s within. Those who are easily upset and can’t accept a bit of fantasy and humor might take issue with some jokes about weight, but the movie’s central message is worthwhile. The film does well visually; Paltrow looks fantastic here—and I've never been a huge fan. She’s stunning in this role, and the filmmakers make sure to showcase her beauty. Other attractive women are also present, such as Susan Ward who plays Hal’s neighbor, Jill. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and was filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina. GRADE: B+
