The couple’s relationship draws attention wherever they go, though Hal remains unaware of the reactions around him. The Farrelly Brothers, typically known for more outrageous comedy, surprisingly deliver a film that is gentle, heartfelt, and understated, while still incorporating their signature edgy humor. Gwyneth Paltrow takes on a double role, wearing a fat suit to demonstrate her comedic abilities, and Jack Black is lively and captivating in a part requiring him to ignore what he’s supposed to be seeing. Jason Alexander plays the weaselly best friend, providing a reliably unpleasant but effective supporting performance as someone who keeps secrets. The movie isn't consistently hilarious, but it doesn’t require that level of intensity; it generates amusement where necessary and touches on emotions with appropriate force. Considering society’s fixation on body size, particularly for women—a trend often set by Hollywood itself—Shallow Hal offers a welcome diversion. 7/10
