The storyline isn't very substantial; it might be better to join in when Roundtree appears. He embodies Shaft, but Sam and the younger actor simply don't capture that essence. The movie runs for a full two hours, which feels excessive. If you were to start with Roundtree’s appearance, perhaps 40 minutes would have sufficed—that seems like an appropriate length for this installment of Shaft. There's a point roughly halfway through, around the hour mark, when it initially gives the impression of being quite good and you think it might be ending soon because it felt so quick. Then, you’re forced to sit through another hour as the momentum dissipates.
