I’ve seen felines do more for a lesser offering. Occasionally, remakes succeed, and this one is an example. It's John Singleton's reimagining of the 1971 film Shaft, which originally featured Richard Roundtree in the lead role. Roundtree appears in this version as well, portraying Samuel L. Jackson’s character’s uncle, also named John Shaft. The part suits Jackson perfectly; he brings a great deal of charisma and threat to it, and the movie easily carries its weight because of him. The story involves Shaft resigning from the police force after realizing that the legal system is unable to keep racist murderer Walter Wade Junior (Christian Bale, who looks fantastic in a tuxedo despite playing a villain) off the streets. Shaft pledges to deliver Wade to justice through whatever methods are needed. He’s also dealing with other issues, including Latino drug lord Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright, genuinely funny) and some questionable police officers. The script is somewhat predictable, but as an action film—one that has the style and witty humor that audiences want—it delivers exactly what it promises. The supporting actors are all strong performers, including Vanessa Williams, Dan Hedaya, and Toni Collette, while Busta Rhymes’ energy is undeniably captivating. Isaac Hayes' iconic theme song remains, enhanced by composer David Arnold, ensuring the original film’s atmosphere isn’t lost. Donald E. Thorin's cinematography is crisp and ranges from beautiful (the nighttime scenes) to raw and realistic. Shaft, the 2000 release, remains tough and deserves more recognition. 7/10
