Ben Kingsley gives a terrific performance in this final comedy heist film. His character is tasked with bringing "Gal" (Ray Winstone) and his wife "Deedee" (Amanda Redman) back into the criminal world from their retirement in Spain. At first, they have no interest in working with “Logan” and his plan, but a sequence of bizarre happenings and an unusual negotiation—almost devilish in nature—soon reunites them with “Teddy” (Ian McShane), and they begin plotting once more. Simultaneously, "Gal" experiences some strange dreams, leading him to struggle separating what’s real from his vivid and threatening visions. The basic plot isn't particularly noteworthy, but the characters do elevate it. Winstone, who can often seem stiff, is effective portraying a tough criminal alongside his genuine affection for his wife and family. She, formerly an "adult entertainer," is equally strong, and even McShane manages to evoke memories of his earlier charm and success in “Lovejoy.” However, the real praise belongs to Kingsley; with a witty script supporting him, he portrays this truly awful and unpleasant character with a playful tone and a constant undercurrent of menace. I especially enjoyed the final twenty minutes as things reach their climax—it’s full of unexpected turns and is far from predictable. It doesn't have my absolute favorite actors, but credit to Jonathan Glazer for creating a clever and refined drama that still feels raw and powerful.
