It’s really your approach that bothers me. It isn’t about what you are saying; it’s more about everything left unsaid—the implications and hints dropped along the way. Sexy Beast is a film by Jonathan Glazer, with a script from Louis Mellis and David Scinto. The cast includes Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Amanda Redman, Cavan Kendall, James Fox, and Julianne White. Roque Baños composed the music, and Ivan Bird was responsible for the cinematography. Gary ‘Gal’ Dove (Winstone), a former thief living quietly on the Costa del Sol, has his peaceful life disrupted when menacing gangster Don Logan (Kingsley) shows up and insists Gal return to London to participate in another heist. The year 2000 brought with it several British gangster films. The popularity of "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" created an opportunity for filmmakers wanting to contribute to the trend of “Brit Grit.” As is typical, the quality differed, but among those released in 2000, there were a good number of strong movies—and Sexy Beast stands with them. The plot itself isn’t complex; it follows a familiar film noir pattern of an ex-criminal risking everything he's built for one last job. However, the filmmakers manage to tell the story with flair. Kingsley delivers a powerful performance, given free rein to unleash his darker side through profanity, intense stares, violence, and a general disregard for anyone but himself. Director Glazer, whose work prior to this was primarily in commercials and music videos, demonstrates a talent for striking visuals and memorable scenes. He begins with an unusual sequence of Gal sunbathing by his pool—the sunlight beating down—before a massive boulder suddenly crashes into the water, all set to "The Stranglers" song "Peaches." That’s quite the introduction to filmmaking. The film's first half is strongest, taking place at Gal’s Spanish villa. Glazer carefully positions the characters (Gal lives with his wife, and two friends from England live nearby) as they argue and seem intimidated by Logan, who would readily send them all away if he doesn’t get what he wants. The atmosphere is stifling and tense; it feels like something's about to happen—and it does. The second half isn’t quite as intense or exciting, although the robbery itself has moments of brilliance, but the resolution works well because Gal and his companions have earned our support. Sexy Beast isn't just suggestive (the filmmakers clearly don't take themselves too seriously); it's tough and brutal, yet also strangely beautiful. It’s good. 8/10
