It’s possible that this is the greatest film ever made. It represents a remarkable achievement in extended storytelling, featuring exceptional acting, beautiful cinematography, and impressive set design. Consistent with Kurosawa’s style, the movie confronts the subject of avarice and isn't hesitant to scrutinize privileged groups, specifically those who claim samurai status. Most viewers will find the characters engaging, and Toshiro Mifune delivers an outstanding performance; his character is a wonderfully funny yet sorrowful figure. The fight scenes feel very visceral, with mud, rain, and disorder adding to the impact, which I found appealing. While the middle section moves at a somewhat leisurely pace, it doesn’t diminish what is ultimately a truly exceptional work of art.
