I've lessened my consumption of Indian movies lately, but I continue to keep up with Tamil cinema. Occasionally I check out smaller films, especially those featuring Vijay Sethupathi. The role of a police officer has been portrayed by many prominent actors in Kollywood and has consistently proven popular. So when I learned that Vijay Sethupathi was taking on such a part, I felt it was something I needed to see. It wasn't a particularly impressive film, not up to the standard of Vijay Sethupathi’s work that I usually seek out. The movie feels somewhat commercialized and adheres to familiar conventions of Tamil cop films, including memorable lines and a predictable way of dealing with criminals. Nevertheless, it proved to be fairly entertaining. Sethupathi plays an honest police officer; he's married with two children. Criminals are intimidated by him, as are the officers who work under his command. One day, he becomes involved in investigating the death of another police officer, and the case quickly takes unexpected turns each time he gets closer to solving it. A direct clash between him and the antagonist arises shortly thereafter. The sequence of challenges they present to one another, and ultimately who prevails and how events unfold, are revealed in the final portion of the film. This is the second project pairing the director and actor. I haven't seen their previous collaboration, but I’ll check it out now. It also marks a second partnership between the two leading actors after 'Pizza'. The performances were good across the board, including the child actors. Local audiences may appreciate this film more than viewers outside of Tamil Nadu because it contains elements they typically desire. Although I found the villain to be quite stereotypical – not just in this movie, but really in most commercial Tamil films. To have greater international appeal, it could have been improved, especially if the music video sequences had been omitted; that would likely have brought the runtime down to around one hundred minutes. But overall, I believe it’s still worth seeing. 6/10
