Set it Up struck me as an average romantic comedy. There are moments of cleverness and the writing is generally quite sharp. What distinguishes it from other films in the genre is its unusual approach. Typically, romantic comedies feature characters who either have feelings for each other right away or quickly develop them before facing obstacles to reach a happy resolution. This one follows a different course; the two pairs of lovers start out disliking each other. The assistants agree to team up and try to set their bosses up, hoping that if the managers find romance—or even just a physical connection—their workload will decrease. That’s essentially what Set It Up is about, and it's handled reasonably well. I appreciated that it didn’t depend on crude jokes or explicit content; that was definitely a positive aspect of the film. While I don’t anticipate rewatching it anytime soon, I’m glad I saw it initially.
