"Serial Mom," definitely not for those easily disturbed, proves to be an exceptionally enjoyable and somewhat shocking experience filled with dark humor. The film’s portrayal of everyday life in suburbia shares a similarity with David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" (1986), but it quickly becomes clear that appearances can be deceiving. Things often seem perfect on the surface, and there’s usually a reason for that. Even those who appear to be the friendliest neighbors might harbor hidden darkness, and seemingly ordinary individuals could also be terrible monsters. Beverly Sutphin exemplifies this perfectly; she's an appealing housewife and mother while simultaneously being a cold-blooded serial killer. John Waters’ controversial black comedy gives him a chance to offer sharp observations about modern American society and the constant media obsession with celebrity culture, which often seems absurd and reckless.
