Gary Cooper portrays Alvin York, who enjoys both hard work and revelry in rural Tennessee, despite cautions from the concerned pastor (Walter Brennan) and his mother's quiet observations (Margaret Wycherly). He develops an interest in Gracie (Joan Leslie), prompting him to abandon his wild ways and envision a settled life. However, a romantic competitor interferes with this ambition, but before he can spiral out of control, something resembling divine intervention occurs in the woods, leading him to embrace faith. When the United States enters World War I in 1918, York attempts to leverage his religious convictions to evade conscription, not due to fear, but because he believes that taking a life is unforgivable. These requests are ignored, and he’s assigned to a regiment where his marksmanship quickly becomes apparent. He declines advancement and informs his superior officer that he still wants to be recognized as a conscientious objector—though he consents to training other soldiers. Nevertheless, after deployment, how long can he maintain his convictions before acknowledging that even the nation's founders had to set aside their ideals for the greater good? The film is inspired by the actual story of Alvin York, and I believe Cooper delivers one of his most captivating performances in portraying him. It may feel somewhat disjointed at times, and it takes a while to reach the central conflict, but when it does, the movie playfully celebrates a national hero—a man of simple origins—with humorous scenes involving turkeys. Considerable care went into the film’s visual presentation, and each episode of York's life is supported by an ensemble cast, making for a well-constructed fictionalized biography.
