Initially, my impression was that this felt like a combination of “Quantum Leap” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” leading me to expect something unoriginal. However, it turned out to be considerably stronger than I anticipated because we learn that the villainous "Operative" (Chiwitel Ejiofor) is hunting for an extremely valuable item. This isn't a piece of jewelry or technology; it’s “River” (Summer Glau), and as he nears her ship, the "Serenity," things are heating up for its captain, "Mal" (Nathan Fillion), and his diverse crew. There’s considerable disagreement within this group, largely because no one understands why this seemingly ordinary woman is so important to their relentless pursuer—but will they be able to stay united and concentrated enough to escape being caught and perhaps even uncover the truth? The performances aren't particularly noteworthy, but the conversations are quite amusing, the special effects are impressive, and there’s a good amount of fast-paced space action with well-staged fighting, laser blasts, and an impressively realized ending that the visual effects team should be pleased with. I haven't seen "Firefly" (2002), which this is based on, but even viewed independently as a science fiction adventure, it’s still effective.
