This is the captain. We’re having a slight issue with our entry sequence, so there might be some turbulence and then – an explosion. Serenity was written and directed by Josh Whedon and stars Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Ron Glass, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The music is composed by David Newman, with cinematography by Jack N. Green. When Captain Mal Reynolds (Fillion) of the spacecraft Serenity takes on Dr. Simon Tam (Maher) and his sister River (Glau), it pulls the entire crew into a situation involving conspiracy and powerful rulers from other planets. As someone completely unfamiliar with "Firefly," the TV show that “Serenity” grew out of, I didn’t have any prior knowledge to go on. What I discovered was an incredibly entertaining blend of science fiction and Westerns that deserved better box office results than it received. The actors seem comfortable together and are very engaging to watch, which isn't surprising since Whedon brought them all over from “Firefly”—a smart decision. There’s a lot of action, and the dark humor is quite good. However, for people like me who haven’t seen "Firefly," it does feel like an extended episode of television. The plot is complicated, and Whedon tries to pack a great deal into its two-hour length, which requires your full attention. That's reasonable enough, but some viewers (or perhaps more people in general) would go into “Serenity” expecting a science fiction action adventure, not something that challenges you intellectually. Whether this contributed to the disappointing box office performance is hard to say. But it seems like this film was really only made for dedicated fans of the original show. It’s frustrating because the final third is fantastic—a real blockbuster moment. The action scenes are skillfully done, the story becomes even more intense, and the main characters truly come into their own, especially Fillion. A major positive point is that the ending doesn't disappoint those who have followed the journey of Serenity and its crew. It’s clever genre filmmaking, a very enjoyable film; however, it probably won’t appeal to mainstream audiences. This might suit those die-hard fans for selfish reasons, but it also means we are unlikely to see a sequel. And that would be a real loss because someone new to this like me could easily enjoy more of the fast-paced action and excitement. 7/10
