The film tells a sorrowful story of a timber baron and his new bride in North Carolina, spanning 1929 to 1930. As the Depression begins, Pemberton (Bradley Cooper) brings his wife to his logging operation in the Smokey Mountains (Jennifer Lawrence), and she quickly demonstrates her ability to hold her own with the workers. She adjusts to life there, but deception soon emerges. "Serena” was filmed in 2012 but wasn't released until 2014-2015. It draws inspiration from a 2008 novel, though it diverges significantly enough that experiencing them as separate works is necessary for full appreciation. In the film, Serena appears fragile and mentally unstable beneath her outward strength; in contrast, the book portrays her as consistently powerful until its very end. Her appearance also differs – she frequently wears elaborate dresses in the movie, whereas the novel emphasizes her masculine style of dress, always wearing trousers. Pemberton’s character is also presented as more agreeable here. There are other alterations as well. Therefore, I'm evaluating this as a self-contained narrative. The first half is impressive, featuring stunning locations and cinematography, along with an engaging drama that includes occasional moments of excitement, crime, and corruption. Naturally, the costumes and sets characteristic of the period are exceptional. However, around the midpoint, the film loses momentum, becoming somber and then persistently bleak for the remainder. It’s reminiscent of “Revolutionary Road.” I understand why it has received low ratings, but there's still much to appreciate within this emotionally difficult story. For example, the movie highlights expectations surrounding marriage, such as complete fidelity, and the pain that arises when those expectations are (inevitably) disappointed. Furthermore, in a marriage, there’s an implicit assumption of producing an heir, and failure to do so can drastically alter circumstances, whether real or perceived. This echoes Hannah's situation described at the beginning of 1 Samuel. Rhys Ifans’ portrayal of Galloway is also noteworthy; he’s a compelling character—a man possessing unusual qualities and a sense of danger. It’s unfortunate that his development was cut short. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 49 minutes and was filmed in the Czech Republic at Barrandov Studios, Prague, with exterior shots taken at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.
