This movie is sure to appeal to people who like films like ‘Grand Hotel,’ with their many stars and melodramatic feel, though it’s on a smaller canvas. It brings together several performers I really like from that time period—Deborah Kerr, Rita Hayworth, David Niven, Dame Wendy Hiller, Burt Lancaster, and Rod Taylor—and the way they interact is fitting given how well-chosen the cast is. It's striking to see Lancaster and Niven playing characters who are less than admirable, and also knowing that a film set in Dorset, England, was filmed entirely in Hollywood and based on a combination of two one-act plays by Terence Rattigan, expanded to accommodate more actors. The attempt paid off, as Best Adapted Screenplay was among the seven Oscar nominations it received (and it took home two, for Niven and Hiller’s performances). I suggest watching this film if you appreciate any of those performers or enjoy classic films from that period, particularly British-themed stories adapted from stage plays. The 100 minutes will be time well spent—Mann was truly skilled at producing movies like this (check out ‘Marty’ if you question that)...
