This isn't your typical nighttime adventure set in Seoul. I’ve previously noted in my review of 'Train to Busan' that there’s an anime prequel, and this is it—the one from the same director. Releasing them relatively close together has both benefits and drawbacks. Comparisons are inevitable, but the different formats offer a degree of justification. Both films have dedicated fans though. It isn’t a top-tier anime production, but it's acceptable thanks to the quality of the narration. The story was good; like its live-action counterpart, there are many unexpected developments. In this kind of survival scenario, you really can’t trust anyone. It had a slow beginning, then gained momentum once the chaos started, culminating in a satisfying twist at the end. After seeing it, you might think it could have made for a decent live-action movie—I felt that way too. Whether prequel or sequel, it's not bad, although it can’t be directly compared to the original. The events unfold over just one night, but the entire film isn’t set at Seoul Station. It all starts there, though this film also fails to explain where everything began. Aside from that, it’s an enjoyable anime with some genuinely tense moments. As on any ordinary day, Seoul Station was calmly shutting down near midnight. For a group of homeless individuals, however, it provided shelter. One of them discovers his brother is seriously injured and seeks help nearby. Simultaneously, a father locates his runaway daughter who has been staying with a young man, so the two set out together to find her. Soon they realize that people are behaving strangely. After understanding the severity of the threat, everyone begins running for their lives—whether they’ll successfully locate what they're searching for is revealed later on. > "If I had a place to go, I would not have stayed at Seoul Station." Having enjoyed a very good live-action zombie film and then learning about this one, I was looking forward to seeing it. It’s a well-made film, especially considering the somewhat lackluster start; how it developed and concluded was excellent. Most viewers will likely appreciate the second half more. Overall, it has an appropriate length and interesting characters. The voice acting seemed fine. Since I don't understand the language, that wasn’t really an issue for me. The visuals, or rather the animation style, could have been a bit better though. In some scenes, it was obvious they used digital backgrounds, perhaps converting 3D to 2D, particularly during running sequences where the movement felt stiff. A real negative, for me, was the connection between these two titles—the timelines of the films overlap; specifically, this film's ending and the other’s beginning. Because it takes place at night, most people are unaware of what's happening in the streets. As dawn breaks, more people appear, leading to widespread chaos, which is then seen from the perspective of train passengers. As I mentioned earlier, a disappointment after watching both films is not knowing the origins of this sudden outbreak. You may have heard that 'Train to Busan' is being remade in Hollywood. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should do so and also see this one. While they aren’t essential to each other, these films don’t share many details; it’s similar to the relationship between ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘10 Cloverfield Lane.’ Staying informed is worthwhile in case future installments are made. I liked this film, but not quite as much as the original. Another significant difference is that witnessing the zombies (attack) in the anime version is a different experience—perhaps less frightening for those easily scared by such films. Regardless, it's worth watching, especially if you’ve already seen the previous film. _7/10_
