I delayed seeing this film because I’m from Selma, Alabama, and that’s where I spent my childhood. It’s difficult growing up as a low-income white girl in a town so central to the Civil Rights Movement, since some of the Black residents there still harbor resentment towards all white people, and it continues today. I've never been prejudiced myself, but certain individuals in that town genuinely are, and I believe this is largely because Selma represented a critical juncture in the broader struggle for civil rights. Leaving Selma wasn’t a negative experience for me. As a teenager, I studied the March since I was too young to have participated or hadn't even been born yet, and I know they left out several important details in the movie that they didn’t want viewers to be aware of. Because of these omissions, I can’t rate it any higher than 1 star; there are quite a few things missing that the public shouldn’t have been kept from seeing. The casting was excellent and I felt a sense of pride seeing my hometown portrayed so beautifully in the background shots. Nevertheless, I still can't award it more than one star because of the exclusion of certain aspects of the story—aspects which are historical facts and should not have been left out.
