It wasn’t groundbreaking, but it also wasn't terrible. Similar to the previous year, 2015 was another time when science fiction films were plentiful in cinemas, and this one was something I was looking forward to seeing. If you generally like stories with good production values, then this film should be satisfactory. The actors did a commendable job as well. So, what held this movie back? The last widely praised film from Tarsem Singh came when he was involved in writing the script. After that point, his projects haven't been very successful, and those films were all written by someone else. I think he needs to be involved in both areas where he excels. Consider this film as an example: it had a strong story and a good cast, but many people who saw it felt the writing was lacking. Even though his screen time was limited, Ben Kingsley’s character left a lasting impression throughout the movie because that's how the concept was structured. Ryan Reynolds doesn’t often star in films that are considered particularly memorable. He frequently appears in decent movies that don’t receive much recognition, and this one suffered from the same issue. Some people have drawn comparisons to 'Face/off', but I felt it resembled a combination of 'The Island' and 'Skeleton Key'. Regardless, I enjoyed myself. The premise wasn't entirely original, but it was presented in a unique way, though it could have benefitted from more depth when displaying everything the film had to offer. My approach to watching movies, even ones that are considered average or worse, is that I don’t expect every aspect to perfectly align to meet critics’ standards; because I'm passionate about films and generally enjoy them more than dwelling on their flaws. If there's something specific that I find engaging—like the acting, music, story, or visuals—I appreciate the effort put into it, and I feel this film is much better than what reviewers suggest. 7/10
