It’s simply foolish, truly lacking in intelligence. The movie's tone shifts wildly; at one point it presents itself as a vibrant, energetic blockbuster with music reminiscent of Alan Silvestri, showcasing resourceful young inventors from disadvantaged backgrounds. Then abruptly, it veers into gritty depictions of gangsters and an overt focus on Black Lives Matter themes, where the inventive kids abandon logic to engage in predictable time travel scenarios for a rescue mission. And then it concludes without resolution. Not leaving things open to interpretation, but rather with a sense of having exhausted its exploration of unwarranted police shootings of young black people—a feeling that there’s nothing left to add and it's time to simply end the story. It’s poorly conceived, overtly moralizing, disregards its own internal consistency, features uninspired performances, and is generally disappointing. The music was good, though. I understand what they intended: to create a genre film geared toward a Black audience. The issue lies in adapting a screenplay originally written for a white demographic and superficially adding cultural elements instead of crafting a story specifically for an African American audience. This results in the perception that either white filmmakers are attempting to connect with Black viewers, or Black filmmakers are striving to produce a film that celebrates their culture while still appealing to a white viewership. The final outcome is yet another mediocre Netflix production.
