If I were to compile a list of my most cherished films that aren't big-budget spectacles, Secrets and Lies would undoubtedly be very high on it. It's a film I've revisited several times, and I anticipate I’ll keep doing so from time to time. The performances are outstanding; it is truly an ensemble piece, without any major stars, but three of the principal actors—Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn, and Claire Rushbrook—rank among Britain’s finest. My initial viewing was actually the first time I'd seen them act, and that experience led me to actively look for their work in other films. The movie received the highest honor at the Cannes festival, and Brenda Blethyn rightfully earned an Academy Oscar. The narrative is deeply affecting, providing opportunities for character development. Several Mike Leigh movies have more than just his familiar actors in common; they also incorporate a significant emotional revelation toward the end that delivers a strong impact. This film shares that characteristic with Mr. Harvey Lights a Candle and All or Nothing. I understand that Leigh informs his cast about the general story but gives them freedom to improvise dialogue, sometimes catching them off guard during filming, though I haven’t investigated his methods closely. I could easily continue praising this beloved movie, but I wouldn't want to lessen its effect for those who have yet to experience it. Just watch and appreciate it.
