SECRETS AND LIES, directed by Mike Leigh in 1996, focuses on the hidden aspects of family life. The story centers on Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a London optician who discovers her birth mother after the passing of her adoptive parent. Her surprise is amplified when she learns her biological mother is Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn), a white woman struggling financially and burdened by remorse. Cynthia’s relationship with her daughter Roxanne (Claire Rushbrook) is strained, as she worries Roxanne will make the same errors she did in her youth. Difficulties also arise in Cynthia's connection with her brother Maurice (Timothy Spall) and his wife Monica (Phyllis Logan), who have achieved success through a photography business. Hortense’s involvement disrupts this unhappy family dynamic, though not without causing pain along the way. By this point in his career, Leigh had developed a distinctive filmmaking method where actors would inhabit their roles in realistic settings for extended periods before filming began. This approach resulted in remarkably believable performances and characters enriched by small, improvised details. The audience develops a strong sense of familiarity with these individuals. Leigh also skillfully blends sadness and comedy, often placing humorous moments after emotionally significant scenes or presenting images that leave the viewer uncertain whether to smile or weep. Despite the strength of the acting and those touches of humor, certain aspects prevent me from wholeheartedly endorsing this film. I’ve never been satisfied with Leigh's use of music; it seems inadequate. Also, only one scene (a carefully arranged outdoor barbecue) truly stood out for its visual design. Furthermore, I believe his earlier movie Naked demonstrates a more effective realization of his approach. Nevertheless, the performances in SECRETS AND LIES are remarkable, and I would typically suggest seeing this film.
