John Chard on Secrets in the Walls

7/10 · Oct 3, 2014

I keep hearing her cry, constantly… A woman who's going through a divorce and her two young daughters relocate to an older home whose price seems unbelievably low. It doesn’t take long before odd events begin, and the purpose of that unusual wall is unclear. Secrets in the Walls doesn’t bring anything fresh to the genre of haunted house movies, and the storyline echoes something you might find in a Richard Matheson piece, but it succeeds at what it sets out to do. The usual tropes are present—unexplained noises, a music box, an unsettling metal covering, eerie artwork, and sudden scares through reflections and shadowy areas. Jeri Ryan, Marianne Jean-Baptise, Kay Panabaker, and Peyton Roi List all deliver solid performances; Christopher Leitch’s direction is appropriate for the kind of scary story being told, and the technical aspects—music and cinematography—are well managed to maintain a feeling of tension. It's safe to suggest this movie to people who enjoy haunted house horror films, and considering it originated on Lifetime Movie Network, it’s surprisingly better than many higher-budget Hollywood movies released recently. 7/10
