A writer experiencing a divorce finds his routine disrupted when a man from the South arrives at his lakeside home in upstate New York, claiming he stole his writing. Maria Bello and Timothy Hutton appear as the wife and her boyfriend. “Secret Window” (2004) is a drama and crime mystery that evolves into a thriller/horror sequence toward the end. The film was adapted from a Stephen King short story, but director David Koepp altered the ending because, according to the movie itself, “the ending is everything.” The scenery is beautiful, and the portrayal of a writer’s everyday life feels authentic and even funny at times. Johnny Depp delivers a solid performance, while Gillian Ferrabee stands out in a brief appearance as Fran Evans. It shares similarities with "What Lies Beneath" and "Cold Creek Manor,” but also has elements reminiscent of “1922” and an aspect that I can’t describe without spoiling things (though it feels somewhat clear and foreseeable). I found the movie enjoyable, though ultimately disappointing and not something I'd revisit. While I like those other films better, this one isn’t too dissimilar. The film has a runtime of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and was filmed in Bromont Sur Le Lac, Québec, approximately 45 miles east of Montreal, along with surrounding areas, including the city itself. Additional filming took place in New York City. GRADE: B-
