The initial scenes brought “The Hunters” (2013) to mind, as a group of friends stumble upon a basement that turns out to be filled with advanced technology and devices resembling superhero gear. As "Charlie" (Walker Scobell) and his skeptical companions investigate, they discover they aren't the only ones looking for a special power source capable of altering global dynamics. A competition quickly develops between the two groups in their pursuit of it. Will these young people be able to outmaneuver their more forceful (and adult) opponents, spearheaded by "Argon" (Michael Peña)? The film is enjoyable—a straightforward family-friendly science fiction story with decent special effects and a touch of foreboding leading up to an action-filled finale that makes good use of the technology. Owen Wilson appears at both the beginning and end as “Jack,” and while the movie feels somewhat extended, it's generally a watchable drama featuring some humor in the writing; I also thought young Scobell was quite amusing to observe.
