The film contains some promising elements, but ultimately doesn't quite work because even energetic performances by Artie Shaw and his orchestra feel lackluster. The lack of connection between Fred Astaire as “Danny,” Burgess Meredith playing his accomplice "Hank," and Paulette Goddard portraying their former manager "Ellen" doesn’t help matters. These two men have been profiting from a college band for nearly ten years, but are now compelled to navigate life outside of that comfortable setting. Both characters play the trumpet, which is convenient since Artie needs a trumpeter! He's also searching for someone to handle the business side of his orchestra, and so the foundation is laid for some musical comedy as they compete for both her attention and employment opportunities. It isn’t terrible, it just feels dull. The dance sequences are unremarkable, and even Johnny Mercer’s typically strong songwriting struggles to inject excitement into songs like “Dig It” or “Would You Want to be…?”. There are a few enjoyable parts where Shaw's band gets people moving, and we see that Astaire was also quite skilled at the piano, but even considering it was produced during a time when war concerns were growing in America, the whole thing feels unoriginal and poorly assembled. It’s clear that even seasoned performers can’t turn something unsuitable into an appealing partnership.
